Myrtle Memories

Myrtle Memories:

When you think of vacation, what are the top 3 most important things that come to mind? For me, it is family bonding, relaxation, and enjoying the beach. My family has been going on vacation every year together since I was old enough to remember. When I say “family”, it includes my mom, dad, sister and grandparents from my dad’s side. I am very close with my whole extended family, but the closest with my Grammy and Pop. They have always lived down the street from us, shared all our “firsts” with us growing up, and have always been one of our biggest fans and supporters. They truly make our vacations ones to remember!

Birthday Party:

Ever since my first birthday, my family has been going to Myrtle Beach. Although I do not remember much about those young ages, there are plenty of pictures to bring back memories. My grandparents were there to celebrate every first I experienced such as my first time in the ocean. Little do you know, shortly after this picture was taken, my trouble-maker older sister shoved my poor innocent head straight into the cake and of course, I cried.

Take Cover:

Although Myrtle has been the location for many happy memories, there is one memory I will never forget. My gram stayed home to pack lunches and get things around the house ready. My dad was driving my sister and I around in the golf cart because that was one of our favorite things to do. Meanwhile, we got a call over a loudspeaker throughout the campground for all houses to take cover and to not go into the ocean. As my dad started panicking because he had two little girls in the back of an unsafe vehicle, he floored it home to drop us off and continued to go back to the beach to check on my pop and my mom. Everyone was running to pack up their things and to take cover anywhere possible. My dad luckily found my pop and mom, helped grab their stuff they had set up, and they took cover in the men’s bathroom along with hundreds of other people. This was the first time throughout our whole tradition of going to Myrtle that a hurricane hit. Thankfully, everyone was safe.

Traditions:

Speaking of tradition, there are two things that always happen when we go to Myrtle: peanut butter marshmallow crackers and root beers, and hours upon hours of fishing. After tanning all day long, getting sand in places you probably don’t enjoy, and most likely getting sunburn, our traditional snack helped to forget about everything else. Grammy is always the one who makes the crackers, and each person likes them a little differently. Let’s just say we made friends with a lot of seagulls and everyone gets a little sticky. The taste is so worth the stickiness.

Fish, Fish, Fish!

After showering and a good cook-out dinner, it is finally fishing time! Every night when we fish, we go to the same location. Nevertheless, I was bolder as a kid because now I am terrified to touch a worm and now fishing time means gossip time for me. We never really caught that many fish, but my sister always had her mind set on that same location. Behind the lake are all the houses that people can rent. On the other side of the lake, there is a path that leads to the campground. It really is such a beautiful location.

Activities:

Myrtle Beach is the perfect vacation for families, children, or couples of any age. There is just the right amount of activities to do on the campground, or just a short drive away. My favorite thing to do is mini golf. My sister does not like it, but I think it is mainly because I kick her butt every time. This link is the top ten mini golf courses around Myrtle Beach. https://www.myrtlebeach.com/golf/top-10-myrtle-beach-mini-golf-courses/ These courses are not far from campgrounds or resorts and they are a lot of fun. My family has been to four out of the ten of them. Hopefully we continue this to play at all ten!

Book Your Trip Now:

The houses are usually very clean and well put together. This website, http://bookings.lcrrm.com/ is the website my family and I use to look at rentals in Myrtle. We just booked for this summer! However, no matter how beautiful the house is, you will always have cockroaches by the steps to the deck at night. Every afternoon when we would return home, before entering and while walking up the steps, we would stomp to scare them away. I hate bugs, but there is no changing it. That is what truly gives you the vacation experience.

Laughing Out Loud:

Last year we made a trip very last minute, thus the house was not the best. My sister brought her friend, so I got voted to sleep on the pullout couch. (That is the one thing I hate about being the youngest). I tried to squeeze and sleep three across on a full-size bed, but that was very uncomfortable. Since I was sleeping in the common area, I made sure the door was locked. After getting the pullout couch ready and lying in bed our second night there, I heard someone struggling to enter through the door and the doorknob moving. I started to immediately panic, thus something like this has never happened to me before. I later find out that my pop was having a late-night ice cream snack on the porch and I accidentally locked him out. As I tried to sleep again with my heart still racing, I heard a clicking noise very close to my face. I just ignored it thinking that it was the fridge making weird noises. I then felt something moving in my hair. I flew out of bed to find out I was cuddling with a cockroach. Let’s just say, I slept horrible that trip and three people are not meant to be sharing a full-size bed for a whole week.

Thanks for traveling through Myrtle with me! Can’t wait to see you there!
